Kayaking and Meditation Retreat in Alaska

A mindfulness retreat in pristine wilderness in Tebenkof Bay, Alaska.

Nowhere is the power of contemplative silence more profound, the combination of solitude and community more nourishing, than in the primal context of wilderness. Set within the Tebenkof Bay Wilderness Area in Southeast Alaska's Tongass National Forest, these journeys take wilderness experience to a deeper level by including the equally wild and powerful resources of "contemplative mind."

Our daily meditations will make use of traditional Buddhist meditation practices, and complimentary techniques that help deepen our relationship to ourselves, the earth, and awaken our receptivity to nature as the definitive teacher. Every activity, from silent meditation to eating to paddling to sharing stories around the campfire, is approached as an opportunity to deepen awareness. As we experience ourselves as part of the broader web of life, our lives gain new meaning and we can renew the sense of enchantment and connection with life. This is a rare opportunity to sit in community, in silence, in a pristine natural setting.

This trip is open to anyone who is in good basic physical condition, and has sat at least one formal meditation retreat. Participants must be comfortable with two - three hours of sitting meditation daily. The basic daily schedule will include sitting and walking meditation, Gi gong movement meditation and periods of silent kayaking. This trip will emphasize silence, but there will be daily dharma dialogue, periodic opportunities for personal interviews with the teachers, and evening group conversations around the campfire.

Whenever you bring your attention to anything natural, anything that has come into existence without human intervention, you step out of the prison of conceptualized thinking and, to some extent, participate in the state of connectedness with 'Being' in which everything natural still exists. To bring your attention to a stone, a tree or an animal does not mean to think about it, but simply to perceive it, to hold it in your awareness. Something of its essence then transmits itself to you. You can sense how still it is, and in doing so the same stillness arises within you.
