This will be a beautiful morning of mindful walking and meditating in the beautiful hills of Marin, near the ocean. We will walk and meditate in silence and Mark will give some guidance about how to cultivate an embodied mindful awareness, becoming intimate with both the landscape and our heart’s relationship to the natural world. Mark will be drawing specifically on practices from his Awake in the Wild book that will guide participants to cultivate serenity, awe and love.

Awake in the Wild, Meditation in Nature Retreat

Now in its 32nd year, the Monday Night sitting group at Spirit Rock has been a welcoming refuge for the community to gather, hear the teachings of the Buddha and practice mindfulness meditation. We begin with 30 to 40 minutes of guided meditation, followed by a 15-minute break. The teacher then offers a dharma talk and answers questions from participants.

Metta is the Pali word for friendship or lovingkindness. It is taught as a meditation that cultivates our natural capacity for an open and loving heart. With its roots in practices said to have been taught by the Buddha himself, metta is traditionally offered along with meditations that enrich compassion, joy in the happiness of others and equanimity. These practices lead to the development of concentration, fearlessness, happiness and a greater ability to love. This silent retreat is suitable for both beginning and experienced meditators.

Finding Refuge and the Wise Heart in Challenging Times

Buddhist teachings provide a variety of practices and tools that provide a sense of refuge amidst any circumstance.
